Mission Statement:

Use BSA approved methods to provide youth an opportunity to grow and mature in to leaders of character with strong moral principles while having fun and adventure as they learn and use Scout Craft and Wilderness Skills as they develop and implement Leadership Abilities in a safe and secure environment supervised by BSA trained adults.

Troop Principles:

  • Develop and use of Scout Craft and Wilderness Skills

  • Excellent meals on camping tips (No hungry scouts, or adults)

Troop Focus Areas:

  • Leadership (Through elected and Scoutmaster assigned positions)
  • Learning Scout Craft, and Wilderness and Life Skills

 Promoting teamwork:

  • Having fun
  • Troop overnight activities (Monthly)
  • Troop day events (Month: service, parades, hiking, biking, and other outings
  • Venturing activities for 13 year and older scouts (One per month: Cross Country skiing, backpacking, caving, white water rafting
  • Summer program (merit badge days, summer camp, Venture camp, day hiking and backpacking

Description:

  • Troop meetings are run by the Senior Patrol Leader (SPL) and his 3 hand picked Assistants (ASPLs), with adults providing supervision and advice when asked.
  • Each month the Leadership Corp meets with the Patrol Leaders at a Patrol Leader Conference (PLC) to plan out the next 4-5 meetings.
  • Each Troop meeting consists of:
  • A learning opportunity, such as Scout or adult presentations (winter camping, backpacking, first aid, snow sports, bike use and repair, etc)
  • A game, requiring teamwork, Scout Craft, or other positive attributes.
  • Patrol meeting to discuss and plan future activities
  • Scouts are encouraged to work on merit badges and rank advancement. Scouts routinely achieve First Class by the end of their second year (June), before summer camp.
  • The Troop believes Scouting should offer something for every age, which is why there is a strong emphasis on High Adventure activities for 13 year old and up.
  • Adults are encouraged to participate in outings put take a back seat role, allowing Scouts to exercise their knowledge, skills and abilities with minimum adult intervention.
  • A significant number of Troop 884 Scouts, 13 and older, participate as Camp Counselors at Goshen Scout Reservation. (Excellent training for responsibility and leadership, while earning money)
  • Two fund raisers each year with proceeds going to individual Scout accounts to curtail cost of events.
  • Yearly, Junior Leadership Training (JLT) for Scouts 13 years old and First Class
  • Annual, June meeting for Scouts to determine the next year’s Troop outings)
